agreeing to furnish the said Brown necessary fine wood and wood for cooking purposes. And the said freedmen hereby contracts with said Brown and bind themselves to cultivate said land in such crops and under such directions as said Brown or his appointed agent may prescribe, To keep up good and lawful fences around them, Keep off the logs and trash, and clean out the fence corners, and creeks in the cultivated fields, Also to take care of and be responsible for the stock, Say horses mules & oxen, said farming utensils furnished them, either for their return in like good order as received by them, or the money value thereof for which their share as hereafter provided for in the crops to be raised is pledged. It is however understood that said freedmen are to be responsible only for one half of the necessary wear and tear. And to insure the proper cultivation of said lands, the undersigned freedmen hereby bind themselves, to work as is directed, diligently and faithfully at least twenty five days in each month, and to commence their work by sunrise each day and work till dark, stopping for dinner, one hour in Winter and two in summer, unless their crops be in such good condition to the satisfaction of said Brown or his agent, as not to require work, during which time of course no labour will be required.
