Freedmans Contract. The State of Mississippi Monroe County Police District No 4 of Said County This writing witnesseth that W J Stephenson a citizen of said district, has this day hired & employed David Loury & his wife Julia Henry his son Millie Ann & William Bradford Freedmans of color to work on the farm of S.S Bibb & Martha H Bibb of which H. Bibb is agent for them upon the following terms, rules & regulations & for time hereinafter specified. 1st, said term of service begins on the 14 day of March 1867 & terminating on the last day of Dec 1867. 2nd, said employees shall receive for their labour & services one fourth of the cotton corn & fodder one half thereof however to be reserved by the employer intill final settlement as security for the faithful performance of this contract. 3rd. said employer shall furnish house free of rent & fuel free of charge & shall also furnish good Substantial & Sufficient Rations of such food as is usually supplied to plantation labours, to consist of meat & meal or if they cannot by due exertion be obtained such equivalent as will comply with conditions aforesaid 4th. said employees obligate themselves to do & perform with zeal & alacrity, all & every kind of work labour & service necessary & useful on a grain or stock plantation in preparing for a crop & in cultivating & gathering the same & such then work & labor during [[set?]] time covered by this indenture about the house barn out houses & primises generally as may be required
