Sec. Am. Tr. Society

Dear Sir:
Your favor of (no date) Stating that you had forwarded a Set of the Tract Societies Readers for Freedmen and asking for information in regard to their introduction in this State, is before me.

In reply I would say that I have given the books a cursory examination and in the main I heartily approve them, and having availed myself of the [[strikethrough]] opp [[/strikethrough]] advice of Bvt Maj-Gen. J W Sprague Asst. Com. for Mo. Ark. and Ind. Territory. I am prepared to Say that if you will forward a quantity of your publications to me at this place I will undertake to dispose of them [[in of?]] Such manner and upon Such terms as may Seem best. I would further State that I do not approve of indiscriminate donations to the Freedmen and in my labors among them and in my interviews with the teachers I urge the importance of Self-dependence. Many of the Freedmen are abundantly able to pay for what they need They want real friends to advise them what to do and how to do
