Dear Brother:
It gives me pain to write evil reports concerning anyone, but justice to our cause compels me to disclose villainy wherever it exists among our laborers.

Yesterday, I had an interview with Maj. Andrus the gentleman who is conducting the plantation where Mr. H.C. Hazledine is teaching on Red River and according to his report Mr. H. is very far from what he ought to be. Mr. H. has not been well for the last two months, and the Maj. says his main indisposition has been caused in a great measure by dissipation on his way hither. Still further he has heard him use profane language, and he has heard him use language towards one of of the female colored servants for which he was

obliged to rebuke him, and, from another party, he has Hazledine's avowal that he has indulged in improper intercourse with one of the young negresses. These are grave charges to bring against any man, and specially again a man holding a commission from a Miss'y Society; but when such charges are brought by men of reliable character, we have to notice them. I think the easiest and best way to rid ourselves of this man without causing too much scandal is to apply immediately for his transportation to his home on the plea of sickness, starting in your application that he has been engaged in teaching more than six months. Then we will be rid of his influence. I will see the Maj. again and will make a recommendation of some one to supply Hazledine's place if you think best to remove him.
Enclosed you will find extract of letter from Mr. Casey to Mr. Colby in regard to the operations of Mr. Wright. In addition to the rascality detailed in this letter, he obtained under false pretenses about $60 from Mr. A.E. Habacht Agent at Arkadelphia, Clark Co.

I will give you the standing of the Maj. who brings these unfavorable charges against Mr. Hazledine. He was a Maj. in the of our volunteer regiments, and at the close of the war he was appointed assistant U.S. Assessor for the District where he resides. I state these facts so that you may see that this report is backed by a responsible man. I received your communication in reference to Mrs. Pierce's medical bill. The Agt. of the Bureau, Lt. Geisreiter, at Pine Bluff, in my absence, not knowing what he might do, did assure H. Lewis that he would meet all charges but it was a personal matter, and he did it to ensure Mrs. P. prompt attention. I of course, assumed the responsibility when I arrived. I spoke to the medical Director at Little Rock, requesting its allowance, but he told me it could not be done.

Very respectfully yours,
