Camden Ark.
Sir:
I have the honor to acknowledge yours of the 7th requesting [[strikethrough]] requesting [[/strikethrough]] a teacher for Camden. The last advices from Mr. Shipherd were that he would send a teacher "as soon as the right man could be found." He has again been requested to act promptly in the matter. Please exercise all the patience at your command and assure the freedmen they will be served as soon as possible. In the meantime they must be prepared to remunerate a teacher.
In this city a school board has been organized and admission tickets are being sold in advance. I suggest something similar at Camden- it will do the freedmen good to go to work in the matter, waiting for a teacher will be less tedious, and it will have a wonderfully stimulating effect at Chicago if it is known that the colored people have the enterprise to raise funds in advance to pay teachers. A School Board or Board of Education should be elected with the Agents advice from the most intelligent colored men in the different denominations to hold in trust any real estate that may be acquired for school purposes and to be responsible for the wages of the teacher. When you have secured a good site for a school house (the larger the better) I will lay the facts before the Asst. Com. and ask an appropriation to build a suitable house.
I have the honor to be
Very respectfully, &c.

Supt. Education.
