Washington D.C.-
Dear Sir:
The freedmen here very much need the kind of reading found in the paper published by your company of which one package was sent me by Mr. Sperry of Memphis in September. but none have since come to hand. I shall take pleasure in distributing such number of copies as you may be able to send to this point regularly.
Habits of temperate living and systematic saving are of primary importance to all classes and ages of the colored people. While many are rising by their [[strikethrough]] habits of [[/strikethrough]] industry economy, and temperance, others are sinking into general vice at a shockingly rapid rate. If they are saved it must be through the efforts of those who have themselves been educated in a higher civilization and a purer Christianity than prevails here.
Most truly,
Wm. M. Colby,
Supt. Edn.

Dear Sir,
In reply to yours of the 13" I would respectfully say that in anticipation of the speedy arrival of one or more teachers for Camden it will not, I think be advisable to open the new school house to other teachers at present.
