Bardwell Rev. J.P.
Vicksburg, Miss,
Dear Sir,
It is very desirable that something should be done during the ensuing year toward the establishment of a Normal School in this State. The legislation required should be secured during the next few months, as there will not be another session after the adjornment of the present one for two years.
I had hoped that the School conducted by the friends in this city would ultimately grow into a school for the training of teachers, but there is little ground for Such hope at present.
I have just learned that [[strikethrough]] there is [[/strikethrough]] a block 300ft front by 400ft deep finely situated on on the bend of the river on which are some government buildings that could be readily secured for School purposes, can be purchased for $5000-, $2000 in hand and the balance in 1 & 2 years at 8 per cent interest. The State would unquestionably grant any needed privileges and if desired would perhaps grant an appropriation sufficient to purchase the real estate. If some responsible agency will assume the conduct of the School I think I can assure them that the government will not only donate the buildings but put them in a condition for ocupancy. I trust you will communicate with the Sec'y of the A.M.A. for instructions on this subject and visit us as early as possible.
Very Respectfully,
Wm. M. Colby
Supt. Education.
