Clark Mrs. A
Helena, Ark.

Madam:

Your letter of the 12" inst came duly -accept thanks for the same. I regret that all persons having anything to do with the school and mission work among the freedmen are not as earnest & indefatigable as yourself and your worthy consort. You must greatly need a new School house and I had supposed it was proceeding satisfactorily. the Agent so reported the first of this month. I presume
you are informed of the character and cost of the house. It will cost, including seats & desks-the "adjustibles hinge seat"- $3415.50 of this sum it is expected the Friends will pay the sum of $1000 and the government the sum of $2415.50-
May I ask you to transmit as soon as convenient a certified copy of the deed to the 30 acres on which the school house is to be built for file in the office of the Assistant Commissioner.
With kind regards to yourself Mr Clark and the teachers.
Yours truly,
Wm M Colby

Sir,
Yours of the 9th & enclosures rec'd. The school house contract with Hawkins & Bro: (Sold to J.M. Peck) specifies that Holbrook's liquid Slate shall be used for blackboard. I can not see that my drafting the specifications makes me responsible for any of the material used, or that I can in any sense be said to "order" the material prescribed. I learn that Peck lives at Phillips Bayou-will
drop him a line.
Very resp'y
Wm. M. Colby
