Little Rock, Ark.
January 30th 1869,

Smith Brevet Maj. General C. H.
Ass't Commissioner,
Little Rock Ark.

General:

I have the honor to enclose herewith a communication from James W. Mason and others, trustees, enclosing deed, and estimate of repairs on school house at Sunnyside, Chicot County, Ark. and asking that said repairs be made by the Bureau. We have never expended anything in Chicot County although it contains a large colored population. If the condition in the deed is not objectionable I respectfully suggest the repairs be made, or an inspection be had with that end in view if the facts are as represented. I presume the statement of Mr. Mason to be substantially correct.

I have the honor to be,
Very respectfully,
Your obedient Servant,
Wm M. Colby,
Asst Sup't of Schools.

Stuart How. Wm A.
Dardanelle, Ark.

Sir:
I would say in reply to yours of the 25th inst. that the requisite conditions having been complied with in district number 13 Pope county the Ass't Commissioner authorizes me to say to Mr. Wm P.

17
Carpenter, the trustee, that when estimates for repairs on the school house are received they will be approved and the repairs authorized. I will add what this is the only application for repairs, with deed accompanying, that has been received at my office from any of the counties named in your letter; but I hope to have an opportunity to act upon similar ones before the conditions on which aid is given are changed, or the proffered aid entirely withheld. I can visit your district only for some special purpose, and under orders of the Ass't Commissioner.

Very respectfully,
Wm M. Colby
Asst Supt of Schools.

Sir:

I have the honor respectfully to transmit herewith an estimate of repairs needed at De Vall's Bluff handed me by Mr. J. H. Hutchinson Civ Supt of Schools. Beyond the statement of Mr. Hutchinson I have no knowledge of the condition of this building, or of the title to the land on which it is situated. I think the repairs should be made whenever the Ass't Commissioner is satisfied upon these points.

I am very respy., etc.
