Little Rock for their respective fields of labor on the 27th ult. I asked credit on behalf of the latter for amount of his Stage fare to Washington ($20.00) till Nov. 15th
Your dispatch of the 1st was received and Miss Cummings telegraphed to at once; also wrote to her, and will visit Batesville if necessary when I hear from there. I am chagrined and indignant at the treatment we have received in this matter.
Dr. Smith State Supt. of Pub. Instruction is in sympathy and cooperation with us.
Very respectfully,
Your obedient servant,
Wm. M. Colby

Dear Sir:
Recent events in this state no one fully confirms the conviction that to make over the school buildings owned by the government to the trustees owning the land on which such buildings are located at this time, would most seriously complicate and sadly embarrass our work, and I trust it will not be done. It is quite evident from my stand point that while there is a Supt. of Education in the State, he alone should have the custody of these buildings. Even after that officer is relieved it will be far better for the freedmen if the A.M.A. can negotiate for the land and own the buildings.
Very respectfully Yours,
Wm M Colby Supt Ed.

Sir: - Having received but two or three September school reports from your districts after waiting till the 19th Oct. I telegraphed you that school reports or your estimates must be forthcoming to secure any more rents, to which you replied that you had sent estimates by mail. I then delayed my report four days longer - till the 23rd - but nothing came, - nor has anything come to this day. On the 28th Oct. I wrote you indicating clearly what I wanted, and enclosed a pre-paid and addressed envelope for your use Should I fail to hear from you by the 10th inst. I may reasonably conclude that your schools go alone and need no more help.
Respectfully,
Wm M Colby
Supt. Education
