into the Batesville school House with or without a contract with the trustee, or to charge rent for the building for the benefit of the A. M.A. The same also at Camden where every member of the School Board is an ex-rebel with no Sympathy for the freedman. Many of whom have withdrawn their children from the School. So, also, at Washington. While visiting the latter School my heart ached at witnessing the cruelty practiced upon little boys and girls by those who are too ignorant to teach, and to heartless to feel.
We should have, and in most cases can have, the privilege of nominating the teachers who are to occupy these buildings while they are owned by us. and we should own them just as long as possible.
In cases where the local school officers would not coƶperate in this way we could insist upon their paying rent for the buildings for the benefit of the A.M.A- And it seems to me the Supt. of Education should have ample authority by Special order over the whole Subject.
Just now a stove is greatly needed in the Arkadelphia house, and one could be transferred from this city if I had the custody of the property, but I have not, my hands are tied. Perhaps my zeal has carried me too far in thus presenting this matter to you, but I think not.- we can not afford to lose what we have gained.
Very respectfully,
Wm M. Colby

Dear General:
I want to say on the subject of School house rent at Pine Bluff that rent should properly be paid by the Board of School Directors and not by the Government, as it was not our arrangement. I will certainly do anything I can to forward the interest of
