School Directors, Bd of.
Little Rock. Ark.
Gentlemen:-
As it is very desirable that for the few remaining months during which the Educational Department of the Freedmen's Bureau is to be continued in Arkansas full statistics of the freedmen schools should be furnished as contemplated in regulations emanating from the war Department and as required by the State Board of Education, I respectfully request that all teachers of colored schools in the city of Little Rock and in your employ be authorized and requested to report the statistics of their respective schools to this office at the close of each month. Our school interests may thus be harmonized, and the extent of the educational facilities furnished by the State to the children of all classes of citizens may be at once fully known at the Capital of the nation.
Simple blanks will be furnished to teachers to be used in making these reports, and any assistance that may be desired will be cheerfully rendered.
I have the honor to be,
Very respectfully,
Your obedient servant,
Wm. M. Colby,
Supt. Education

Dear Sir:-
Your letter of the 4th and report for November are just received. That a first class colored school is at last in successful operation in the Red River valley is a matter for rejoicing. May there soon be a hundred and each one filled with eager learners!
Supt. Millen does not care for a report I think. If you can as well do so please forward report to this office a few days earlier. Let me hear from you each month by letter and oftener if I can do anything for you.
With kindest regards,
Yours truly,
Wm. M. Colby
