Baird had gone & the two were thoroughly demoralized. I disclaimed any authority to direct but earnestly advised them to push on, quoting the chained lions from Pilgrims Progress and telling them that of all the counties in the State I would prefer Lafayette, where I know teachers are wanted and there is money to pay them. Evans stated that he was under no obligation to go into Miller's Dist. & proposed  to take the chances here. Pond's history has been [[?]]. I may be mistaken but  think he would fail anywhere in this rough county.
