Office Asst Supt Freedman Greensboro N.C. Aug 18". 1865. James Stuart, colored, being duely sworen, testifyes that on last Saturday night of the 11" isnt I was at home, late at night I heard a knock at the door of my fathers, R. Stuart house. asked who was there Mr. Balanger asked if my father was in. I opened the door, he, Balanger, came in. I went to the door, saw another man but he did not come in. Balanger asked if there was any Government property there. I told him Balanger, there was an old gun taht the soldiers had gave it to me, which [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] he Balanger, found standing behind the door, he, Balanger told my father he would have to go with him to Jones house to see about some guns that belonge to the Government. My father told him Balanger, that he, could not walk. Balanger then told him that he could ride. they then went out of the house and about 100 yds was joined by four other's one of them got a mule [[strikethrough]] of [[/strikethrough]] out of the bushes then told my father to get on the mule then they al started I was with them when they started, some one of the crowd told me to go back. I went back and about half hour after they left the house, heard some one hollow, went to the door and could hear the licks, knew not who the parties was doing the whiping or getting whiped. W.E.
