car & had all the respsibility during the storm. she told me it was something dreadful, he being so helpless in case of accident. the roads were impassible in places & they had to detour & go through door yards, but said she saw him [[clear?]] to his front door. I told her it needed lots of courage & no wonder she was taking the next day off away from her job. lots of live wires were down but very few accidents resulted from that. Alice was in great danger when she walked up after dark. the lights were off. her letter of yesterday said she arrived home to Mattys at 1/2 past 11 safe she went up through our old place she said lots of trees were down across the road & Aunt Matilda's old fence was blown down & an elm tree down to her old place & old [[?]]  house the awnings were some of them blown down she said that she rode from Brockton it was the only [[?]] that came through that night & they went back six times. it was so difficult but finally reached the town. trees & wires were down accross the high way & it needed all the courage the poor man possessed to go on as he did. I was a wreck our windows & doors stood the wind, but they rattled & were in danger of blowing in at any minute. [[Mrs?]] Barry said she was'nt a bit afraid but prayed through the whole storm & said it was what saved us. the oak right in back of the little building & our white lilac & trees over next to us were broken but thats most all the damage it did us here.
