Pleas to pardon me for this intrusion, for under no consideration would I trouble you in this way were it not in answer to the first demands of duty.

But being placed in a peculiarly responsible position I hardly know how to act, or what cours to pursue.

Early in November two of us came here as teachers of the freedmen & Mrs Phelps kindly permitted us to occupy a portion of the hospital building as school room for the colored children.

Thus for the progress of the pupils has been very gratifying indeed and in realization of the rapid progress they are making we have felt in a measure paid for all our toil &
