I have long been ashamed of & have in part broken of from & will quit entirely.
As to qualifications & character I can show as good testimonials as any man can reasonably ask, These extend over a period of thirty years a number of which I have with me. I would be glad however to have the opportunity of passing an examination if you think it necessary. I hope you will write me stating frankly & fully the grounds of objection to me on the part of the Bureau; please state all the particulars, giving the sources of your information, &c I think I shall be able to remove all reasonable objections, as I have not, to the best of my knowledge, either by word or deed given just cause of offense. I came back here by virtue of mutual arrangement with the colored people made before I went north, and I now have a good school of over sixty scholars. Please answer immediately
Very Respectfully L.S. Byers
