such a movement as this.

I am in receipt of a letter from a planter on Red River who is anxious to employ a suitable teacher, and is willing to pay $30.00 per month, board &c and even do more than this if the freedman, on his place will encourage
their children to attend to their improvement.

He states that if some man,(an old man of steady, & sober habits preferred), could be obtained, he would retain him until the children on his place were well advanced. He has now on his place 47 children,(many of them however, too small to go to school.)

I am decidedly in favor of this movement and will heartily encourage it. Hoping that I can be assisted in accomplishing these ends. I will in future, in making contracts on the
larger plantations in my district, [[strikethrough]] [[acquire]][[/strikethrough]] require that some provisions be made for the instruction of these children.

Circulars have been received and forwarded to the different Sub agents in my De't (as pertaining to the above matter.) Their reports will be forwarded as soon as received.
