Fort Smith May 11th 1867

Dear Sir:
 
We arrived here on Friday - and immediately reported to Supt Offise - of our arrival. We made application for the use of the Baptist Church, for to teach a colored school and was denied the house and told that the colored people did not want any teacher from the Freedmans or any other Bureau, They had been decived long enough &c. Thomas (a colored man) is teaching in the house - has fifty schollars, and such a school you never saw, the Sup in this pace is of no benefit - am told by good citizens that he is a disipated - bad man and cares nothing for the interest of colored people - I have not seen him as he had gone to Washington before
