William. H. Colby Esq
Sir.
I am a school teacher on the Plantation called Hawkins Landing on Red River, near to Rocky Comfort, & I take the liberty of writing to you, to ask if there is any society you know of, from which I can get assistance. I have been working hard here during the months of May, June, & July, the rest of the time I have been ill, so ill, that at one time I thought I should never get well again, but I hope (DV) to begin school again next Monday. You have have seen by my reports what work I do in my school, I have a morning school for the children from seven till twelve, a night School for the work hands, which lasts about three hours, & morning & evening school on Sundays, & if my numbers are smaller, in comparison with the other reports, you must remember that mine is a plantation School, & that most of the others are in Towns. What I write about is this, I have to get my pay from the Freedmen
