OFFICE GENERAL SUPT. SCHOOLS.
Washington,[[/stamp]] February 5 [[stamp]]186[[/stamp]]8.

Mr. W. M. Colby,
Supt. of Education,
Dear Sir,
In reply to yours of the 22nd. Mr. Alvord requests me to day that there is no way, under existing laws regulating the Bureau, in which school books can be furnished to destitute schools.
It is not yet known what actions will be taken in reference to the continuance of the Bureau. Should it be continued for another year, Mr Alvord will earnestly recommend a convention of all the Superintendents of Education.
Very respectfully,
Your obt. servant,
S. Willard Saxton,
Chief Clerk Sch. Dep't.
