Dear Sir
Do not think I fully understand the nature of the society proposed to be organized in connection with the school, as auxiliary to the educational work among the freedman. Think something of the kind would be highly beneficial. Had intended, when affairs became sufficiently settled, to do any thing in the school to form a temperance & antitobacco society. Would be glad of any suggestions yourself or the Vanguard can render. The past year has been so hard upon the people, probably there will not be many large boys excepting such days as they cannot work. Did not commence school until the 2d of this month, & then rather against the judgement of the family. They said wait
