In reply to your communication of May 14" I have the honor to State that the prospect in regard to a School for freedmen in this county is exceedingly and decidedly bad. owing to the fact for the Short crop of the past two years has left the Planters bankrupt and the Lands destitute.  Most of the freedmen are working for a Share of the crop. and the planters are unable to Advance anything but rations  On the lower Jardan Place the hands are working for wages and from them I could probably raise one Hundred and fifty dollars towards buying a School lot and building a school House  Col J.P. Farrelly who is more in Little Rock promised to call an Mrs Laylar (Late Mrs Jordan) and endeavar to make such arrangements as would enable me to purchase a half acre or an acre of ground on the west end Place.
The location is the most desirable one
