I have just been notified by Rev J.R. Shipherd, Sect of the American Missionary Association, that I have been appointed by that Association, Superintendent of its Schools for Freedmen in Arkansas and Mississippi.  I have held that office in this State for the last three years, & also that of Agent of the Bureau for the establishment of Schools for Freedmen.  I am not familiar with the operations of A.M.A in your state.  I send herewith a copy of the list of teachers & their locations, sent the by Mr Shipherd; and these are probably all that we shall be able to furnish the present year, unless there is some arrangement by which the Bureau can support them. 

In this state, the Bureau pays about one half the expense of sustaining our Schools, under the head of Rent.  These payments have heretofore been paid on the vouchers of the several teachers; but this year all there payments are to be made upon my vouchers. Please inform me what
