I have the honor to report as follows for the month of April 1869.

Among the colored people there appears to be an increased earnestness in the matter of starting and sustaining schools. Many new schools are now in session, and I hope to have at an early day, a school in each district where there are children enough to sustain a school. In most localities, the state fund will be sufficient to maintain the schools. But the Bureau fund will be of great advantage, in furnishing some necessities, such as charts, blackboards &c. which could not
