Jacksonport Ark,
May 31st, 1869.

Hon. Wm. M. Colby
Supt of Education,
Little Rock Ark.

Sir,
You will see by this communication that I am struggling against wind and tide to effect a permanent basis for our Colored School, upon which I hope to see the glerious structure of the Free School system erected. We have just closed the first term of the Free School with very flattering commendations. The whole number enrolled during the term was 62, 31 Males and 31 females. The average daily attendance of Males runs 23 females 22, Progress made remarkably good. As I do not wish to blow my own trumpet, I would most respectfully refer you to Hon. N. L. Pears our Rep. at Little Rock. Our appropriation is now consumed, and it is a matter of some doubt if the school continues another term,
I am informed that Govt. still furnishes some aid in the way of rent, and if you can pay the rent of a suitable building which will cost in this place not less than $20 per mo. I will make another effort. Our people are very poor
