In reply to a letter of last week directed to Mr. H.A. Millen, in regard to the payment of Rev. Thos E. Hughes teacher of the Freedman School at this place

It may look presumptious to argue the case with Gentleman occupying the positions you and Mr. Millen do, but as a faithfull and honest Citizen, I can not lend myself to pay any man twice for the same service, although it dont come out of my earnings, it would have to come out of somebodys, and furthermore to pay a individual, who has already got ample pay for his services, as well as any other who follows the same profession, and are equal as well qualified, but be pointed the A.M. Society paid him $40.00 and expences per month, and he collected from his patterns here $50.00 per month additional, which makes
