Fort Smith, Ark.
November 26th, 1869.
Mr. W.M. Colby
Dear Sir:
As you will see by our report, we are having quite a house full of scholars, although there are still many children about town who are not in attendance. There is great opposition to free schools throughout this whole region, and the rebels are doing all in their power to oppose the system. The white school here is poorly managed, and poorly attended to what it should be. There are now five teachers. Miss Farrar left Iowa last spring spent the summer in Springfield, Mo. where she taught a small school of her own. Not doing well there she came down to Fayetteville and Huntsville where she stayed two or three
