I was invited to go with Mrs. Barry to spend the holiday to Mary Winslows as I knew none of Bernard Bapens family the crowd would not have been very interesting for me, so preferred to remain at home. she got back early & Mary sent me a lot of their good stuff such as ginger ale & jelly & wanted to send me mince pie but she told her we had plenty of mince meat & that I was not eating much anytime. she is very thought & kind hearted.
I hope Sidney gets rested from his trip [[?]] he is working too hard & its a shame he had to come or such a cause. glad its over. I feel the town will be good to Maude for Ralph's sake. now it will be hushed up. his death may prove a blessing as he was going from bad to worse. Burt Winslow said The hous on Grove St was well made & it would sell for three thousand & it would take two thousand to put it in repair.
The thermometer outside is 50 above zero I have just made my pie & been out to see how cold it is. "as the days begin to lengthen cold begins to strengthen" winter has certainly begun. too bad, glad the snow stays off.
