Section VIII of an Act to alter the Act entitled "An Act to amend the Criminal Law" of the law of
South Carolina "Approved" December 21st 1866. is the law for violation of which the within named pedlar was arrested.

The section alluded to provides
"If any person shall directly or indirectly purchase any product of a farm from any person who is in the employment of another, engaged in husbandry, without sufficient evidence of his right to sell, the purchaser shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction of any such offense, shall be liable to a fine not exceeding five hundred dollars, and to suffer imprisonment not Exceeding twelve months; and the seller shall be liable to a fine at least equal to twice the value of the product sold; and if that be not immediately paid, shall suffer imprisonment in the Penitentiary, at the discretion of the Court.
