I have had applications from people here in my District who-keep their servants and their silver and in many cases their Carriages. Such as those I invariable refused and they are not suited. I do not expect to suit. I do not want to suit them. I would not suit them if I could. I did not come down here for that purpose. I came down here determined to do my duty by the Colored people Honestly Fearlessly and Faithfully let come what would and if the white people did not like me I did not care. They know my will that I do not fear them although I am single handed ; and only a few weeks ago one of them fired a Rifle at me from opposite my house as I stood by a tree, the ball went whizing by my head very near. It was between daylight and dark, and I knew whomever it was fired could see me plainly, so I stood still. They did not however repeat.
