Headquarters, Assistant Commissioner, Bureau Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands, South Carolina. Charleston, S.C., January 17th 1867. Brevet Major Edward L Deane Actg. Asst Adjt General, Major. I have the honor to transmit herewith report of investigation into affairs on the Santee and over the country between there and McClellanville. I have reported very fully on many things, feeling that I was as duty bound to do so, after seeing the soils so plainly. I had to make three journies without the aid of Major OBrien (very much to my disappointment) as he was taken down at McClellanville, with a very bad foot, confining him to the house. I am very truly & respectfully yours E W Everson Bvt Maj & A.D.C.
