Bethel Hill Person County North Carolina January 10 1868

Gentlemen

The bearer Bevely Harris was raised by me and I can say of a trouth that I never knew him to Steel 25 cent worth in all of his raising nor have I ever known him to take any thig that did not belong to him during the 37 years he lived with me and surved me faithfully up to Lees Surrender he came to me this evening and requested me to write to you for him informing you of his treatment and I do it Cherfully knowin [[?]] I do that he has be Very badey treated I shall have to be a little tedious but you will pleases hear me through  In 1866 he lived with me and helped me make a crop and early in September 1866 a Negro from Granville County came to this county and broak open Hugh Woodss Store and stold some seventy dollars in money and several pare of boots and shoes and a good money other articles and was taken up near Danville Virginia [[?]] put in jail Woods received a letter to that [[?]] took one of his neighbours and went and brought him back to Person and [[?]] on with him he asked him who helped him break open his Store and his answer was he did not know the [[?]]of the name but when they got to [[?]] whare the store had been robed Woods [[?]] off as I understood in the neighbourhood and had [[?]] Negromen brought to see if he could recognizes either of them to be the one that helped him break the store and he said that Beverly was the man and they took him and put boath of them in Jale to await their tiral I went to the Jail afterwards and talked with the rascal an asked him how he come to sware to such a lie on Bevely. I told him Bvely was born mine and [[?]] raised him and that I had never had known him [[?]] the worth of my whip which I held in my hand
