Dear Sir
For the first time (any one white or black that has lived on my plantation), we appeal to you for aid. This old man and his family are in needy circumstances  Our failure of a crop has rendered us all so. The continued rain made the crop short, and that was nearly all destroyed by the late freshets. He also has a daughter with 3 small children perfectly destitute of food and clothing  There is also another woman on the place in like situation. I have helped them heretofore when their crops were short, and they were doing tolerably well, but the failure has rendered the helper helpless, and therefore I do hope you will do something for them  my waggon is
