Office Sub Asst. Com. B.R.F. and A.L Mount Pleasant. Titus County. Texas. July 12th 1867 1st Lieut. J.T. Kirkman, U.S.A. Actg Asst. Adgt. [[Adjt.]] General Sir In obedience to order addressed to Col Starr dated June 24th 1867 from the Office of Superintendent of Education Refugees and Freedmen, State of Texas, Galveston, Texas. I have the honor to report that I have made diligent enquiry with reference to the number of Schools that could be established, - the number of Pupils that would probably attend,- the probable support they would be able to extend, - the character of the Teachers that could be employed, - in fact, I have sought to elicit all the information, necessary, to carry out, as I understand the intention of the Government with reference to the education of the Freedmen. I have been here but a short time, my duties as Commanding Officer of the Post, as also of my own Company, as are also [[their?]] [[?]]ing upon me as Sub. Asst. Commissioner, which duties are always daily and sometimes hourly occuring, have prevented me from visiting the different portions of the District, and I am unable to make the report required Very respectfully Your Obedient Servant Ira W.
