Brenham Augt. 3. 1867

Lt. J. T. Kirkman
A.A.A.G.

There is nothing like the interest taken when expected and desired, the older portion care little or nothing for it themselves, at present nearly all the instruction received is from Sunday schools — the other schools having vacation, — the agent has used his influence to start schools in different parts of the county — the freedman are waiting until fall — the children are nearly all working on the crops at present and are out of money — when the crops are harvested & sold I have every reason to believe that schools can be established on a permanent basis.

Good Northern teachers are wanted, they not only better understand the business, but command more respect from the freedpeople.

Sunday schools at Brenham, Chapel Hill, Washington & Independance, attended at a rough estimate 400.
