Bureau of R.F. & A. L.,
Hunstville Mch. 1st 1867.

Lieut. E. M. Wheelock
Sup of Schools
State of Texas

Sir:
I have the honor to enclose herewith a School report for month of February 1867.
Would state that the report enclosed embraces three schools, one in Hunstville with thirty-one scholars taught by Mrs. M.E. Tanner, one at Stubblefield Mill with twenty-three scholars taught by Mr. G. S. Whiteman and one on the Trinity River with eighteen scholars taught by Mrs. John Rodgers, all of which have been started since Jany 1st 67. In addition to the day school in Huntsville there are two Sabbath schools in operation, the average attendance being seventy-nine scholars, no night schools for adults have been established.
The children make remarkably apt scholars, the difficulty generally with teachers, not professional, is that they advance the children too rapidly, many are able to spell in two and three syllables who but imperfectly understand the alphabet. I have instructed the teachers to be more particular with elementary lessons, imparting to the children a clear and distinct knowledge and sound of each letter before advancement.
