The houses in which schools are held are of a poor character and the teachers and scholars but illy provided with seats, slates, charts etc, many of the children from former associations, are very unruly, it would therefore be advisable to secure if possible, male teachers for whom they have more respect.

Mr. G. W. Grant of Grants Colony five miles from Huntsville claimes to have secured an appropriation of $500 00 from Genl. Howard for the purpose of building a church and school house, the colony consists of forty families and would no doubt support a school, he expects the amount appropriated to be forwarded by or through your Head Qrs.

I have collected from the freedpeople of Hunstville about $120 00 in specie for the purposed of erecting a school house, a lot can be purchased for a small sum and with the assistance of the Sup't, a suitable building erected thereon; the collection will I hope reach the sum of $300 00, with a like amount appropriated by your Hd. Qrs, a fine school can be established second to none in the State.

If books, slates or charts are furnished by you, I would respectfully ask that a supply be forwarded me,
