of disturbance is the appointing of ignorant men to preach the gospel to them - who know more of politics than religion and but very little of either.- Such an one is now in Columbia, appointed by the Methodist Episcopal Church North. He is trustee for the church-has received money from his society to assist in building a church and school, but is not disposed to give any security to the school trustees by which the children could be protected in their rights.- according to Mr Walsh's agreement with Lieut Hutchison and upon which General Griffin promised $350.00 to finish the house. There are members of the African and Baptist churches here as well as of the Methodist, and in justice to these I decided not to finish the house until I received some legal security for the benefit of the children of these people. Satisfactory arrangements could be made now for all to attend school in the same house, but such would not last long - the black men have no thoughts for the future - all are absorbed in the present, and being of a litigious disposition I perceived the uselessness of expending government funds for the benefit of any particular religious denomination. A good school house can be built here for about five hundred dollars with such assistance as I know the citizens of the place will render.
