of the Methodist Episcopal Church North for which he was a missionary. Not one word is said in the deed about using the house for school purposes so far as I can learn. When Mr Welch arrived in Galveston he shipped about five thousand feet of lumber to this place, the cost of which, including height, was about thirty five dollars specie, per thousand - $175.00, which at the usual percentages amounted to two hundred and forty five dollars, currency. After my arrival here I prevailed upon the trusted to exert themselves towards building the house. They immediately hired a carpenter (colored) to build the frame and enclose it, for which they agreed to pay him seventy dollars specie - $98.00 in currency. A white man could have been hired to do the same for half the money, but they did heed my advice, thinking they were capable of managing the affair themselves. When the work was done one of the trustees went to Houston and received some money there with which to pay for the labor; but he paid only twenty seven dollars specie, and now the mechanic holds the property for the payment of his wages. It is his intention to take a lien upon it in a few days.
