The freed people are anxious to have a school started here. Many are trying to learn and make some progress although they have no teachers.

They have a sabbath school which is well attended and besides the religious instruction they receive, there is some effort made to teach those to read that are unable to do so.
The colored people are about to commence a school house for which they have on hand about $75.00 specie, and about $60/. worth of material and a lot to build upon, the building is to be 20 x 25 ft.
The best manner in which they could be assisted would be money to purchase lumber, nails for which at this time would be very acceptable.
