Waco, Texas, May 31. 1867

Lieut J. F. Kirkman
A.A.A. Genl,

A great many citizens have subscribed to the school fund, - There is but one school in the County, that about one mile from the City, which is in a very dilapidated condition, having been blown down two weeks ago, and now is being erected as fast as possible, the house has no floor or desks

Some complaint has been made to me about the teacher, as being a man,- They seem to think a Lady teacher would give more satisfaction The freedmen are making every effort to educate their children, in East Waco (across the River from this City) there has been talk of erecting a school house, and can subscribe one hundred & fifty or Two hundred Dollars.

I am Sir
Very Respectfully
Your Obt Servt
(Signed) James Jay Emerson
Capt 26, U.S. Infy
Sub. Asst. Com.
