Wharton Texas Oct 1st 1867

Lt. Chas. Garretson
A A A Genl

No new feeling upon the subject of education has been exhibited. No additional steps have been taken to promote the same & the freed people have made no efforts in that direction since my last report: as regards Wharton Co [[strikethrough]] direction since my last report. [[/strikethrough]] the freed people may be best assisted by receiving pecuniary assistance in erecting school houses, & by having 2 or 3 male teachers sent to them.

As regards Matagorda Co I am unable to make any statement as I have not been able to visit that Co [[strikethrough]] this [[/strikethrough]] since it was annexed to my Sub Dist. The freed people in Wharton Co propose to erect one or more school houses after the crops are gathered.
