Office, Sub. Asst. Commr. Bu. R.F. and A.L.,
Matagorda, Texas, June, 8th, 1867.

Lieut. J. T. Kirkman, 26th U.S. Inf.
Supt. of Education,

Sir:

In answer to your printed letter dated May 27, 1867, and received this day, I have the honor to state that there is but one house based by the Bureau in my district for school purposes; and it is in the town of Matagorda, Matagorda Co. and rented from Mr Fletcher Layton, at five dollars per. month from the first of June, 1867, to the 31st. of May, 1868, inclusive.

There has been no arrangement made about repairs, as I deem there will be none required for a few months. And I think the freed people will make all necessary repairs for the present, at their own expense.

There is one private school in Matagorda, that is not under the control of the Bureau.

I am Sir,
Very Respectfully, Your Obet. Servt.
Wm. Garretson, Sub Asst. Commr.
Bu. R.F. and A.L.
