Office, Sub Asst. Com. Bu. R.F. and A.L.
Matagorda, Texas, July 1st. 1867.

Lt. J. T. Kirkman, 26th, U.S.A.
A.A.A. Genl. & Supt Schools.

Sir:
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of form of lease for school house: also Circular No. 6. ordering schools for Freedmen to close on the 30th. June and to resume on the 1st of October.

Mr. Layton, the lessor, is desirous of abrogating his contract for the lease of School House in Matagorda, and I think another building can be leased by the first of October, on as reasonable (or perhaps better) terms than his.

Shall I release him from his agreement and take the chance of getting another house?

I am very Respectfully,
Your Obt. Servt.
Wm Garretson, Sub. Asst. Com.
Bu. R.F. and A.L.
