A.A.A. General Supt. of Schools. Bu. R.F. & A.L. Texas.

Sir,

I have the honor to report that in my late visit to New Braunfels, I found that A School for Freedmen had been established, but was about to fall through, for want of proper attention. I called a meeting of the Freedmen, and after explaining to them the necessity of working together instead of dividing into religious cliques as they are inclined to do, also the necessity of educating their children, advised them to try to raise funds enough to build a School house at the earliest possible period - promising that the Bureau would assist them on completing it. I also agreed to pay the rent of the building already occupied the rent being ten dollars per month in coin, and after the first of October to employ the present teacher Mrs. Mary Patterson at such salary as might be authorized, also to put the Schoolhouse in proper repair
