Bastrop Nov. 1. 1867.

Lt. Charles Garretson.

Among the masses of the whites there is very little interest felt on the subject of educating their own children, and still less interest is felt on the subject of educating the freedpeople.

The freedpeople generally are awake to the necessity and benefits of education, but very little has been done during the month owing to the prevalent sickness throughout the whole county.

Very Respectfully &c
