Falls Plantation

Here there is a large Sunday School conducted by a freedman whose name I did not learn- A school could well be established at this point as there are a large body of people laboring here who express a lively desire for one.

Ten miles below Marlin near the Robertson Plantation there is a good school neighborhood many of the freedmen in this vicinity renting land and working on shares who desire a good school among them. Mr. Dawson who I learned was formerly an agent of the Bureau is active in teaching a Sunday school numbering forty or fifty pupils.

Unfortunately, in this county there is some misunderstanding between the Union men and the Sub Ass't Comm. Already considerable feeling is elicited.

In this prosperous island town there is a school in operation numbering over a hundred pupils under the charge of Mr. Davis as Principal and Miss Dietrich as Assistant Teacher. During my stay here the Principal was sick and therefore no school was held. Some three hundred of the freedpeople signed the temperance pledge and expressed the utmost interest in the remarks made there respecting temperance and education. There is no organized Sunday school here.
