Stoughton September 21st [1941]

Dear Doris

We are having fall weather. it has jumped from 90°to 50 and we feel the sudden change. a good fire in the kitchen these days seem the proper thing out heat went on one morning early and felt good it much have been at 60 on the thermostat I got up as soon as I was aware of it & turned it off.  its also very dry the little birds dont know what to make of it, they sit & listen for worms. the lawn is all dug up by skunks, they are hard put for grub. we should have rain its so dry. in N Hampshire they are digging wells to get water enough for their cattle to drink. before it freezes up we shall no doubt have some.  They took Percy Woods to the Mass General hospital for observation & Alice has gone up to Maynard to see George Lynch & stay over the holidays all dressed in white from head to foot. the folks here are talking about it. when she was in the hospital he used to go in every night after his days work. she got her money
