Rec'd (Aiken S.C.) Sept. 27.1868.

Head Quarters 2" Sub-Dist.
Bur R.F&AL.
Aiken S.C. Sept. 27, 1868.
Respectfully forwarded to Bvt Maj H Heide A.A. A.G. with the request that if it is possible some measures may be taken for the De Knight's protection.
When men holding influential positions publicly declare that an officer of this Bureau ought to be hung for performing his duty, and his declaration is received with favor by the crowd he addresses, it would seem that the interests of the Government demanded that some notice be taken of the matter. The presence of a military force would do more to preserve the peace and protect Mr. De Knight than any action which the civil authorities would take. From the county officers it is apparently useless to expect any action for the protection of men not in sympathy with the prevalent political sentiment of the white people of Abbeville Co.
